Dolphin trainer Shannon Huyser and others work with dolphins last September in Gulfport, Mississippi.
SPECIAL REPORT
GULFPORT, Mississippi (AP) — Sixteen dolphins from a marine park that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina — including several that were swept out to the Gulf of Mexico and later rescued — have been moved to a resort in the Bahamas.
The dolphins, which have been housed at temporary locations around the country, were transported to Mobile, Alabama, and loaded onto an airplane for the final stage of their trip, officials said.
Another dolphin was left behind because she is ill, said Stacey Coltraine, a former trainer of the dolphins, and will be flown to the Bahamas when she is healthy.
The mammals lived at Marine Life Oceanarium in Gulfport, doing jumps and other tricks in programs for tourists, before it was severely damaged by Katrina on August 29.
and the effects of separation could soon take a toll.
Some of the younger dolphins had been moved inland to hotel swimming pools ahead of the storm.
Eight others were pulled out to sea during the storm when their Oceanarium tank was destroyed.
Biologists located them September 10 by performing aerial surveys, and they were rescued within a few days.
While the dolphins were well cared for at their temporary locations on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and in Florida, Baltimore and in New Jersey, officials were concerned that cold weather
The dolphins will be reunited and live in seven interconnected resident pools at Atlantis, a resort on Paradise Island.
Lets not forget the animals that suffered thru Katrina.
with love to all of them.

HI Marcus,This is one of the reasons I posted this post.. to show how these dolphins in time of stress and horror stuck together even tho they went out to sea they stayed as a family. We can learn a lot from nature as the American Indians has shown us if only we would see :)I find them on google image search.. it’s hard and time consuming but worth the efforts when my readers like yourself enjoy them.Thank you for always understanding the message my posts mean.loveEve
Hi Eve,This is a good story to read. I’m happy that all the dolphins survived the hurricane & will have a new home soon. It just goes to show you that nature is able to recover better than we might think, after some natural disaster. This just goes to show you how tough these animals are to survive what was a horribe experience, and then to be soon reunited in a new home. Just wish we humans could have treated each other better before & now after the hurricane. I bet we can all learn quite a few lessons from Nature if we will only open our hearts and minds.Love,MarcusP.S. How do you keep finding these great pics that go along so well with your posts?
